Here’s how to tell the difference 👇
My Story
For nearly 5 years, I searched for the right mentor.
I switched practice areas. I worked with different leaders.
But it often felt like "Waiting for Godot"—the mentor I needed never showed up.
Then I made a lateral move and met John Anderson (pictured below; 1946-2024):
---> 40-year veteran of the firm
---> On his “last run” before retirement
---> From day one, he said: “I want US to succeed.”
He became everything I had been looking for—and eventually, a great friend.
What Great Mentors Actually Do
They don’t give you a playbook.
They:
---> Help you see around corners
---> Share failures so you don’t repeat them
---> Provide perspective, not prescriptions
The Attributes That Matter
The right mentor is:
---> Experienced in the path you want
---> Candid with uncomfortable truths
---> An advocate when you’re not in the room
---> Accessible but not overbearing (quarterly is enough)
---> Modeling the leadership you want to emulate
How to Choose the Right One
Don’t ask: “Who’s available?”
Ask: “Who will shape my future?”
The best mentors:
---> Are living 3–5+ years ahead of where you want to be
---> Challenge your blind spots
---> Show willingness, not just ability
